Opening Session Message: ‘Learn About Distressed Properties’

Dave Liniger discusses the market.
LAS VEGAS – Associates who understand how to work with distressed properties are positioned for success in today’s market, RE/MAX International Chairman and Co-Founder Dave Liniger told the audience Tuesday at the network’s annual convention.
In his address at the 2009 RE/MAX International Convention’s Opening General Session, Liniger (ABR, CRB) outlined a “two-front” campaign that will (1) train RE/MAX Associates on distressed properties and (2) educate consumers about how RE/MAX agents can assist with short sales, REOs and foreclosures.
“Our training programs will help you help them,” Liniger said, “and earn yourself a commission in the process.”
Liniger announced the debut of a Distressed Properties channel on RE/MAX University’s Agent Training on Demand site, featuring video clips and extensive downloadable resources. He also encouraged Associates to pursue the Certified Distressed Property Expert designation – or the FSS&R certification – in order to equip themselves.
“Short sales will be the next best source of income,” he said. “In reality, most short sales don’t work because the real estate agent doesn’t know the process. That presents an opportunity for us.”
Liniger also mentioned two key agreements designed to bring business to RE/MAX Associates: one with InvestorLoft that will connect agents to investors; and one with New Vista Asset Management of San Diego, an organization that assists multicultural buyers. More details will follow.
“We’re not just standing around wondering what’s going to happen,” Liniger said. “We’re out there making things happen.”

Other Opening General Session highlights:
• Liniger explained that the redesigned Mainstreet and remax.com sites (watch a video) will both go live this spring.
• RE/MAX International CEO Margaret Kelly discussed the RE/MAX value proposition and said Associates should be able to articulate their competitive advantages in a 30-second “elevator speech.” With corporate stability, a strong TV marketing presence, the industry’s best training systems, one of the world’s most recognized and respected brands, and a Web site that delivers an average of 6,000 fee-free leads a day, RE/MAX Associates have a massive amount of support behind them, Kelly said. With these tools and a winning attitude, Associates can do well in 2009 despite today’s economic challenges, she added.
