Trends in New Home Construction

The down trend in the economy has caused some new trends in home building. More and more builders are scaling down floor plan sizes to reduce the cost of new homes for buyers. Smaller homes also help to meet the needs of homeowners concerned with the cost of maintaining a home. Initially smaller homes can mean lower price, on the home as well as on decorating and furnishing. In the long term utilities and maintenance cost less, saving money for years to come.

The average size home in the united state has grown to about 2,200 square feet, with homes in many areas being considerably larger. While the state of the economy has certainly not eliminated the appeal of large homes packed with all the features and frills that have become so popular, it has created a new market for homes of a more modest size and simpler amenities.

Home styles are changing along with the sizes. The trend is moving away from formality in living spaces to a more casual style. Open spaces with little division between rooms that can be used for a number of purposes are part of the new floor plan. If a single room can be used for multiple purposes then there is not a need to have as many rooms. Other areas where square footage is being cut are large entryways and wide hallways.

  1. I am a sales manager for Julie LaTerra Homes, a custom home builder in Charlotte, NC and we are definitely seeing this trend with many of our clients. The great thing about us is that we can build rooms that you will actually use. You will not have wasted space. The rooms in your brand new home will be rooms that are used and serve different needs depending on your family. Think of how much money you can save by not paying for rooms that you do not use.
