Medical Waste at the Jersey Shore?

I can’t believe the summer is almost over! This Monday is the Labor Day Holiday which for many marks the unofficial end of summer. For most central New Jersey school children class will be in session starting next week.  Many families in New Jersey will be spending one last weekend at the shore this weekend, and some have concerns about recent reports of medical waste washing up on New Jersey beaches.

The state Attorney General’s office is currently investigating a wash-up of medical waste on the beach in Avalon, NJ which occurred last weekend. A portion of the beach was closed, after 100-200 syringes and other medical waste washed up. The beach re-opened on Thursday.

The town of Avalon is hoping that the bad publicity will not scare away beach goers’ this holiday weekend.  After all both the timing and the location of the wash-up was just a matter of bad luck.  Only 10% of the beach was affected and even that portion has been cleaned up and will be ready for Labor Day. The wash-up seems to have been an isolated incidence and there is no expectation of a repeat occurrence. So if the Jersey shore is on your agenda this holiday weekend there is no reason to avoid Avalon.
