New 55+ Communities in Somerset County

John Bendall owner of Re/Max Classic Group discusses the abundance of Senior housing available in Franklin.

55+ Communities

The town of Franklin in Somerset County is turning into the latest hot spot for seniors.  It’s convenient location close to shopping, transportation, and major highways is part of its attraction.  There are also two college campuses within a short drive offering many entertainment opportunities in arts, music, and sports.  Because of its size there are also a number of scenic rural areas on which to build.

For all these reasons there are currently five 55+ currently under construction and a sixth awaiting approval.  As the baby boomer generation ages the market for this type of housing continues to grow and builders are planning to be ready for it. There will be approximately 4,500 new units built in Active Adult Communities over the next couple of years.

There is no doubt that this type of living is very desirable.  According to a recent article in the New York Times “Two of the five complexes under construction recently sold out, even before the final granite countertop and designer light fixture had been put in place, according to the developers. They are Renaissance at Raritan Valley, a 400-unit collection of town houses and “carriage house” condominiums set beside a golf course, and Somerset Run, a 775-unit complex with a similar mix that is set in the historic Somerset section of the township.”

These developments are all about life style, they hope to ease some of the burden of home maintenance by providing plenty of common areas, so the residents can relax and enjoy themselves.  Buyers in many of these communities can choose from single family homes, town homes, or condominiums.  There are club houses, tennis courts, swimming pools, and organized activities. The lifestyle is meant to be hotel like, almost like you are on a perpetual vacation. Some communities are even offering services such as grocery shopping, and dog walking!
