If you are just breathing a sigh of relief that you aren’t going to have to mow the lawn again for the season, or if you tend to wait until the last possible minute to take care of home maintenance chores this advice is probably not for you. However, if you are willing to do some work ahead of time this can be the best time of year for taking care of your lawn.
You should start by seeding any bare spots. Grass will grow very well for the next several weeks before cold weather sets in. If bare spots are hardened or dry you may want to water first and then rake a little to break up the soil. It is also a good idea to fertilize your lawn at least once before winter. This is a very good time of year to test your soil for PH and to make any adjustments necessary. You can also take the opportunity that fallen leaves provide by doing some dethatching while you rake.
