A Warning for Homeowners regarding Copies of Deeds

John Bendall owner of Re/Max Classic Group warns homeowners of mail solicitation offering copies of deeds.

I wanted to pass on some information from a recent article in the Courier News by way of warning to Somerset County residents.  There has recently been some mail solicitation of homeowners to purchase a certified copy of the deed to their property.  These solicitations are offering to sell homeowners a copy of their deed at an enormously inflated price.  Most homeowners have a copy of their deed along with the closing papers from the purchase of their home.  It is an important document to have for a number of reasons, and is handy to have available.  However if you are unable to find a copy of your deed you can get one from the county clerks office for a nominal fee, usually only a couple of dollars.  There is no need to go through a mail order service to obtain this document.   To find out more about obtaining a copy of your deed, call the Office of the Somerset County Clerk at (908) 231-7006.
